Rejection shock for Özarslan in Keçiören Council: CHP's 'no' votes disrupt the plan
Mesut Özarslan, who resigned from his party, did not receive the support he expected in the council; the authorization to lease a property in Yükseltepe was blocked by the votes of CHP council members.
Mesut Özarslan, who was elected Mayor of Keçiören as the CHP candidate in the March 31, 2024 Local Elections, announced his resignation from his party in February along with seven CHP council members who accompanied him. Speculations that Özarslan, who continues his duties as an independent, might join the AK Party have remained on the agenda.
According to a report by Cumhuriyet, tensions rose at the Keçiören Municipal Council meeting held on May 12. The agenda included the 10-year lease of a property located in the district's Yükseltepe neighborhood and granting authorization to the mayor and the municipal committee on this matter. Despite receiving a total of 18 votes in favor from AK Party, MHP, and independent members, the proposal failed to secure the necessary majority due to the 19 'no' votes from CHP members.
With this result, Mesut Özarslan failed to find the support he desired from the municipal council following his resignation. The collective 'no' vote by CHP members also dashed expectations for cooperation in the municipal administration.
