Remarkable pepper spray procurement tender from the General Directorate of Security following the protests!

According to information in the Public Procurement Bulletin, the General Directorate of Security (EGM) will purchase hundreds of thousands of different types of pepper spray.

Following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19, the protests that began across Turkey spread over a wide area, from university campuses to city centers.

The use of pepper spray during the protests was among the interventions that drew the most reaction.

According to a report by BirGün, the General Directorate of Security, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Interior, plans to make new purchases to increase its pepper spray stocks. According to the Public Procurement Bulletin, the General Directorate of Security will procure a total of 160 thousand pepper sprays of different types. The gases to be purchased include 400-milliliter pepper spray canisters, hand-thrown smoke-dispersing gas grenades, and five-chamber gas cartridges.

Despite calls from the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) for the banning of pepper spray, the details of these purchases will be kept confidential in accordance with public procurement laws, and the companies with which agreements are made will not be disclosed to the public.
