Right-of-way dispute at local market in Avcılar turns into a brawl
A right-of-way dispute at a local market in Avcılar, Istanbul, quickly escalated into a violent incident involving a knife attack and a vehicle assault. Two brothers were injured in the incident, while the attacking driver was taken into custody and hit with heavy fines.
In the Merkez neighborhood of Avcılar on Wednesday morning, a dispute broke out between market vendors wanting to set up their stalls due to a right-of-way issue. According to allegations, a vendor named Mert G. wanted to move forward with his vehicle and asked brothers Murat Gökçe and Kenan Gökçe to wait a few minutes for the road to clear. However, the tension between the parties escalated.
The incident quickly turned into a brawl, during which Mert G. attacked the two brothers with a knife he retrieved from his vehicle. Murat and Kenan Gökçe were injured by the knife blows. Other vendors at the scene provided first aid to the injured. It was learned that Kenan Gökçe's condition was more serious.
According to the allegations, after the fight, Mert G. lost control and drove his light commercial vehicle with license plate 06 AEA 746 at Kenan Gökçe, dragging him for several meters. Amidst the panic, Mert G. abandoned his vehicle at the scene and fled. The injured were taken to the hospital by ambulances that arrived at the scene.
Police teams examined security cameras in the area and apprehended the suspect, Mert G., in a short time. Both judicial and administrative proceedings have been initiated against Mert G. The suspect, who is expected to be referred to the courthouse after his procedures at the police station, had his driver's license revoked, and the vehicle he was driving was banned from traffic for 60 days. It was also stated that he was fined a total of 180 thousand liras.
