Scandalous defense from rector who hired relatives at university: 'It is a requirement of my religion'
Statements made by Şırnak University Rector Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış on his social media account, which have resurfaced days later, have sparked controversy. While defending the appointments of his relatives and close circle to the university, Alkış stated that those he claimed opposed his rectoral authority had been removed from the university.
The post made by Şırnak University Rector Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış on his social media account on June 17 has been brought back to the public agenda days later. According to the report by Yeniçağ, Alkış, who listed the work he carried out at the university, defended the appointments he made of his relatives and close circle, and said that those he stated were against him had left the university.
HE SAID, "I GOT THE UNIVERSITY BACK ON ITS FEET"
In his post, Alkış stated that when he took office, the university was inadequate in many areas, and claimed that he had restored the functionality of the educational institution.
Alkış stated that he had implemented projects such as the renovation and repair of faculties, campus landscaping, the establishment of a new system room, and the organization of numerous symposiums every year.
Stating that he changed the university's emblem, put the new logo into effect, and determined the university's slogan himself, Alkış said that as a result of his initiatives before the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Presidency to address the shortage of academic and administrative staff, a large number of positions were allocated every year.
He added to his statements that he had appointed hundreds of people he deemed suitable to these positions.
CLAIM OF "I REMOVED THOSE WHO OPPOSED ME FROM THE UNIVERSITY"
Prof. Dr. Alkış also mentioned that those he claimed had opposed him during his tenure as rector had left the university.
In his statement, he used the expressions, "I removed all the unruly ones who opposed my rectoral will and were headstrong against me from the university one by one, by meeting with our YÖK President Erol Özvar and our YÖK Deputy President Metin Topçuoğlu, explaining the situation, and getting their support."
Alkış also used expressions criticizing some media organizations that reported on him.
HE EXPLAINED THE APPOINTMENTS OF HIS RELATIVES ONE BY ONE
Listing the relatives he gave positions to at the university in his post, Alkış stated that his niece, Gülizar Artuç, was appointed to the faculty member position at the Faculty of Theology.
He stated that his cousin, Emrullah Alkış, was transferred from the mufti's office to the university and was first assigned as faculty secretary and then as deputy secretary general.
He announced that Mesut Bayra, whom he described as a close friend, transferred to the university while working as a teacher at the Ministry of National Education, and was appointed to the positions of Director of İdil Vocational School and Legal Counsel there.
HE USED THE EXPRESSION "LOOKING AFTER RELATIVES IS A REQUIREMENT OF OUR FAITH"
Defending the assignments made to his relatives and close circle, Alkış stated that this approach was a requirement of his faith.
In his post, he stated that looking after relatives, supporting one's close circle, and bringing people he trusts into managerial positions meant acting in accordance with his own faith.
To support this view, he included the expressions, "Helping my relatives and friends is a requirement of my faith and is my right as rector."
Alkış also claimed that those who directed these criticisms did not go to Friday prayers, and therefore did not know the meaning of helping relatives in terms of faith.
"I AM PAVING THE WAY FOR THOSE WHO SHOW LOYALTY"
Stating that he had identified those who questioned the authority of the rector's office and the order he established, Alkış stated that he would not allow these people to work at the university.
In his post, stating that those he had appointed to the academic staff to date knew this, Alkış said that those who showed loyalty to the rector were supported and rewarded in their academic careers.
Explaining that he decided to appoint people he trusted and who showed loyalty to the rectorate to the positions opened with the faculty member announcement published in the Official Gazette, Alkış stated that he would personally put the robes on them after the appointments.
"IT IS MY ORDER, GO AND CONGRATULATE THEM"
Making a statement regarding the new appointees at the end of his post, Alkış used the expressions, "It is my order; you too should visit and congratulate these friends of ours in advance."
