Scathing remarks from former AKP deputy! 'A party that set out as the "Movement of the Virtuous"...'
Former AKP deputy and Karar newspaper columnist Mehmet Ocaktan has leveled harsh criticisms regarding his party's 24th anniversary. Ocaktan stated, "The AK Party government, which has shelved law, justice, and meritocracy, is trying to find happiness on its 24th anniversary by imprisoning CHP mayors because it has severed its emotional ties with the nation."
Evaluating the 24th anniversary of the AKP, former AKP deputy and Karar columnist Mehmet Ocaktan made striking remarks. He stated that the party, which once emerged on the political scene as the "Movement of the Virtuous," has today fallen into the need to create enthusiasm through the transfer of CHP's Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu.

Ocaktan emphasized that the AKP has now cast aside law, justice, and meritocracy, and as a result, its ties with the public have been severed. He noted that as a consequence of this rupture, the AKP has turned to methods such as transferring mayors through unethical means or having them imprisoned on its anniversary.
“The AK Party is today implementing all the lack of principles it once criticized as if they were examples of virtue,” said Ocaktan, harshly criticizing the current state of the party.
In his column, Ocaktan also included the following statements:
“The AK Party celebrated its 24th anniversary on August 14. The most striking aspect of this celebration politically is that a party that set out as the ‘Movement of the Virtuous’ has become dependent on the enthusiasm to be generated by the transfer of CHP’s Aydın Metropolitan Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu.
Let us say it without beating around the bush. The AK Party government, which has shelved law, justice, and meritocracy, is trying to find happiness on its 24th anniversary by transferring CHP mayors through unethical means and by imprisoning mayors!..
But it should know that this ‘happiness’ is nothing more than a false spring breeze. Because the winds are now blowing where that AK Party, which responded to the nation’s demands and expectations and thus enjoyed the nation’s favor, once stood…”
Emphasizing that the party has also moved away from its founding ideals, Ocaktan made the following assessment:
“Unfortunately, Turkish politics has been unable to rid itself of marketing the power it receives from the public will in elections without the public’s consent since the day we transitioned to a multi-party system. Our political history is full of examples of politicians who put the national will up for sale. But this ‘turncoat’ mentality has never had a future in Turkish politics, and these politicians have been forgotten in the dusty archives of history.
It is an irony of fate that the AK Party, which set out 24 years ago saying, ‘With the principled politics our party will implement, both our country’s deep-rooted problems will be solved and the shaken trust of the public in political institutions will be regained,’ is today implementing all the lack of principles it once criticized as if they were examples of virtue. Undoubtedly, the AK Party has abandoned not only principled politics but also the ideals of law, justice, freedom, and development it had set as its goals.”
