Sea water recedes in Muğla: Islets emerge

The sea recession observed on the coasts of Marmaris and Fethiye in Muğla was met with great interest by citizens. With the water receding up to 5 meters in the Yalancıboğaz area of Marmaris, islets were formed. Similarly, a recession of up to 2 meters in water levels was observed on the Uzunyalı and İçmeler beaches.

A similar scene occurred in the Gulf of Fethiye. With the water receding, the artificial Duck Island near the shore became connected to the land. This situation caused temporary changes in the marine ecosystem in the region.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Özçelik, Head of the Water Resources Department at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University's Civil Engineering Department, made evaluations regarding the sea recession.

Stating that the event is not linked to earthquakes, Özçelik used the following expressions:

"Tides, storms, wind, and topography play an important role in the recession of the sea on the Aegean coasts. It is an event that occurs in nature at certain times within its own cycle. It does not appear to be related to earthquakes. We are also monitoring the situation."

WHAT DOES SEA RECESSION MEAN?

According to experts, the sea recession in the region is a normal natural phenomenon that occurs depending on tidal movements and weather conditions. Similar situations have been observed on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts before.
