Shakira wins her case against Spanish court

World-famous singer Shakira has been vindicated in her years-long case against the Spanish Tax Agency. The Spanish Supreme Court found the 55 million euro fine imposed on the famous artist to be unlawful and overturned it.

World-famous Colombian singer Shakira has won her years-long tax case against the Spanish Tax Agency, avoiding a significant penalty. The Spanish Supreme Court ruled that the tax penalty previously imposed on the famous artist was unlawful and cancelled the 55 million euro sanction.

In the long-running case, Shakira had faced allegations of "tax evasion" and had been battling heavy financial sanctions. With the court's decision, the eight-year process has come to an end, and the artist has been cleared of all charges.

''The '183-day' rule was decisive in the case''

At the heart of the case was the claim that Shakira should have been considered a tax resident in Spain due to her relationship with former footballer Gerard Piqué.

However, the court ruled that the artist did not meet the 183-day residency requirement necessary for legal tax residency in Spain during the relevant year. This finding removed the legal basis for all of the tax authority's accusations.

''The Spanish state will refund more than 60 million euros''

The court cancelled the 55 million euro tax penalty collected from Shakira in 2021. According to the ruling, the Spanish state will refund the amount in question along with legal interest. It was stated that the total refund amount will thus exceed 60 million euros.

"Justice has been served, albeit late"

Shakira's lawyer, José Luis Prada, stated in a statement following the decision that the process had caused severe grievances.

Prada used the words, “This decision comes after an eight-year ordeal. Justice has been served, albeit late.''
