Signal of a new increase in electricity prices
Mustafa Yılmaz, President of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), made statements regarding a possible hike in electricity prices, indicating that a regulation could be on the table in February.
Sharing his 2025 forecasts for the energy sector, EPDK President Mustafa Yılmaz stated that despite the tightening in financial markets and the rise in commodity costs, there was no serious volatility in the energy field last year. Speaking on Bloomberg, Yılmaz emphasized that Turkey maintains its appeal in terms of energy investments. Noting that the interest of foreign investors, especially in the field of renewable energy, has increased, Yılmaz said, "Foreigners also have a serious appetite. Investing in renewable energy is very advantageous."
Explaining that the legal processes for active investors have been completed, Yılmaz announced that wind and solar power plants with storage investments will be commissioned rapidly. Regarding storage projects, he stated, "This storage projects law was enacted by our Minister of Energy, and we have started the licensing process in a transparent manner. As of today, nearly 350 megawatts of power plants have been commissioned. There is an investment of approximately 5 billion dollars in the field today."
He added that a natural gas saving of approximately 15 billion dollars is targeted in the next ten years with only storage solar power plants.
Responding to questions about the change in electricity prices, Yılmaz pointed out that a new study could be conducted on tariffs in February, saying, "We will do the calculations in February, we may make another regulation. In 4 years, inflation has reached approximately 400 percent, while the hike made to electricity in 4 years is at the level of 89 percent. The sector where the least hike was made is electricity."
