Sinan Ateş's wife Ayşe Ateş calls on the government: 'We want our state to hold them accountable'

Historian, academic, and politician Sinan Ateş was killed in an armed attack in Ankara on December 30, 2022.

Ateş's wife, Ayşe Ateş, held a press conference at the scene of the incident one year after her husband's death.

"WE GAVE OUR LIVES TO THE CAUSE WE DEDICATED OUR LIVES TO"

Ayşe Ateş stated the following:

"The Sinan Ateş murder, which took place at the spot where we are currently standing on December 30, 2022, and which will go down in Turkish political history as a black mark, took a piece from all of our lives. Those who tore a husband, a father, a son, and a friend from life also razed the values that people believe in to the ground. I would like to thank everyone who has stood by us, by the truth, by the law, and by justice since the day my husband was martyred. We gave our lives to the cause we dedicated our lives to. Despite this, the attitudes and slanderous rhetoric of certain circles have weighed as heavily on us as this despicable murder. Those whose eyes are blinded by hatred to the point where they cannot even consider the trauma that my two fatherless children will experience for the rest of their lives have earned the hatred of even the devil, who has stopped bothering the dead, with the ugly attitude they displayed after our martyr."

"WE WANT OUR STATE TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE"

Sinan is no longer among us in body. Do you begrudge him even the soil he lies in with your still-unabated anger? In every statement we have made to inform the public, we have expressed our trust first in God and then in our state, and we continue to do so. There were those who said it was a game of foreign powers, and those who said Turkey was being stirred up before the elections. Even though we knew this was not the case, we chose to be the side that remained calm and calmed others, swallowing our pain so as not to become material for ugly schemes. We want our state to take this heavy burden we have been carrying for 1 year off our shoulders. We only want to experience the pain we have been unable to live for 1 year. We want our state to hold them accountable. From the very beginning, we have said, let justice be served, even if the world falls. What happens when justice is not served?

SHE ADDRESSED ERDOĞAN AND MINISTER TUNÇ

Why has the investigation not been completed and why has a lawsuit not been filed even though 1 year has passed since the incident? I am addressing our President, our Minister of Justice, the prosecutors, and the honorable, honest judges and prosecutors of our judiciary. Let no one forget that my two small children have been left orphans. Let no one allow other children to be left orphans. We believe that justice is the foundation of the nation. Catch the perpetrators who are walking around freely. Do not forget that justice that is incomplete or arrives late is not justice."
