Crisis over 'tailor-made' staff appointments at Şırnak University: Rector promotes those who obey

The statements made by Rector Abdurrahim Alkış at Şırnak University continue to shake the university community. In a Facebook post on December 17, Alkış announced that he would reward those who "obey him" and dismiss those who rebel against the university. Stating that he has received the full support of YÖK, Alkış announced the list of new faculty members to be appointed.

In a written statement to academic and administrative staff, Rector Alkış intimidated university employees by saying, "Even the walls of this institution speak to me; even the echo of the corridors reports to me." Targeting those who oppose him with terms such as "brainless crowd" and "traitor," Alkış claimed that he also received full support from YÖK President Erol Özvar and Vice President Metin Topçuoğlu. With this support, Alkış sent messages that dissenters would be dismissed from the university.

CLAIMED TO HAVE RECEIVED FULL SUPPORT FROM YÖK

According to a report by Oda TV, the Rector emphasized that YÖK supports him by saying, "We talked about the fate of the fools who go so far as to rebel against a rector like me, who embraces this university with his will and introduces it to the world, and I personally conveyed that I would not harbor them in our university and received their approval." These statements have sparked a major debate regarding academic freedom and university autonomy.

"I WILL PROMOTE THOSE WHO ARE LOYALLY ATTACHED"

Rector Alkış stated that he would reward those who are loyally attached to him and announced who would receive appointments in the university's staff postings. Announcing the names for the postings, for which the application period ends on December 31, Alkış stated that the individuals appointed were promoted because they were loyally attached. This list clearly shows that loyal names within the university administration are being promoted.

"OBEDIENCE TO ADMINISTRATORS IS MANDATORY"

In his statements, Alkış stated that in the Islamic religion, it is mandatory to obey administrators, and demanded full obedience from university staff. Emphasizing managerial hierarchy and discipline with the phrase "obedience to administrators is mandatory," Alkış announced that he would adopt a harsh stance against those who rebel against him.

According to legal experts, the fact that Rector Alkış announced the staff postings before the process was even finished and completed constitutes a situation contrary to the law. In particular, making appointments based on "loyalty" and "obedience" constitutes a violation of the Constitution and the Higher Education Law. It is stated that such practices violate the principle of merit and could lead to the crime of abuse of office.
