Sırrı Süreyya Önder targets the Republic! He said, 'God was erased from every sphere'

DEM Party MP and Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Sırrı Süreyya Önder has penned an article that has drawn backlash.

In his article published on T24, Önder addressed the Republic of Turkey from the perspective of "Islamic Law."

Claiming that the founding of the Republic of Turkey was a process of "erasing God from every sphere" and "the state placing itself in God's stead," Önder stated that the state, by equating itself with God, "drew a boundary" (had), and that this line, "unlike in Islamic law, is not something that can be known beforehand."

The relevant paragraph from Önder's article is as follows:

"Traditional Islamic Law divides crimes into two categories: those committed against God and those committed against humans. In the former, there is no pardon, reduction, or retribution/compensation, and the punishment is mostly vital; it is called 'had.' Hudud is the plural form, and 'had' (boundary) comes from crossing or not knowing these boundaries.

What I am lamenting is this: When the new version of this country was being established, it happened like this: While God was, heaven forbid, being erased from every sphere, the state placed itself in God's stead and, equating itself with God, drew a 'had' for crimes committed against it. This line, that is, the state's line, unlike in Islamic law, is not something that can be foreseen or known in advance. The only way to realize that our state, which does not know its own limits, has crossed its limits/line is to cross that limit. There is no concrete warning or definition drawn before crossing it. You do something and cross it, and the state reminds you that you have crossed it in a way you will never forget."
