Şişli Municipality workers hold 'wage hike' protest

Members of the Genel-İş Union, affiliated with DİSK, and other municipal workers gathered in front of the municipality building, unfurling banners and chanting slogans.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Zeynel Yiğit, head of the Genel-İş Union Branch No. 3, stated that they have been living at the hunger threshold for years and are only asking for the fair compensation for their labor.

"MANAGERS HAVE AVOIDED PAYING WAGES THAT REFLECT THE SWEAT OF THE WORKERS"

Stating that they have maintained a conciliatory and constructive attitude in their negotiations with the municipal administration, Yiğit noted the following:

"In the final meeting held yesterday, our branch management sat at the table with a conciliatory attitude, but the managers, who try to secure political ground through the services we workers provide, have avoided paying wages that reflect the sweat of the workers. It is unacceptable for the municipal administration to act as if they are unaware of current economic conditions. We want to live in a fair, equal, and dignified manner. We will resist until we receive the compensation for our labor."

Yiğit stated that while the minimum cost of living for a family of four in Istanbul is at least 47 thousand liras today, the wage deemed appropriate for them is 27 thousand liras.

While a portion of the group dispersed after the statement, some workers are continuing their sit-in protest.
