Meteorological engineer Dr. Güven Özdemir stated that there is a high probability of snowfall in Istanbul at the end of January. Explaining that the Marmara Region is currently under the influence of the 'lodos' (southwesterly wind), which is causing some light precipitation, Özdemir said that the region will be under the influence of high pressure on Wednesday and Thursday, with fog and icing expected.
He stated that starting from Friday, the lodos will become effective again, and temperatures will rise to between 13 and 17 degrees.
However, Özdemir noted that as the wind shifts to the north starting Friday evening, temperatures will drop rapidly and a cold air mass will arrive in the Marmara Region. He said that precipitation is expected on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, with sleet in the sea-level areas of the Marmara Region and snowfall in the higher elevations. He noted that there is a possibility of seeing snowfall in Istanbul when temperatures drop below 4 degrees.
Özdemir emphasized that starting from Tuesday, the Marmara Region will again come under the influence of high pressure, and adverse weather conditions such as icing, frost, and fog may occur. He also pointed out that the precipitation could increase water levels in Istanbul's dams.
