Snow warning for Istanbul from AKOM
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has announced that the precipitation expected throughout the week is likely to manifest as sleet and, at times, snow in the northern and higher parts of the city.
In a statement released by the IMM's AKOM, it was noted that Istanbul and the wider Marmara Region will come under the influence of cold and rainy weather.
The statement noted that air temperatures are expected to drop by 8 to 10 degrees starting this evening, and that with temperatures falling to winter levels in Istanbul, intermittent downpours will occur.
The statement conveyed that the precipitation expected throughout the week is likely to be effective as sleet and, at times, snow in the northern and higher regions of the city.
It was emphasized that air temperatures are expected to remain 2 to 5 degrees below seasonal norms until January 16, while temperatures are projected to hover around seasonal norms between January 17 and 25.
The statement also reported that the IMM has completed its winter preparations and that nearly 12 thousand personnel and more than 3 thousand pieces of heavy machinery will be on duty to combat winter conditions.
