Snowball fight in New York turns into police violence, 4 officers hospitalized

New York City has been blanketed by the thickest snow cover in recent years, with streets covered in up to 50 centimeters of snow. A snowball fight organized in Washington Square Park to celebrate this scene quickly spiraled out of control, becoming the center of controversy in the city.

According to information obtained, residents of the Greenwich Village neighborhood in the area threw snowballs and pieces of ice at police officers in the park where they had gathered for fun. In footage circulating on social media, it was clearly seen that the police were retreating while seeking cover.

REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVED BUT...

Despite the arrival of reinforcements at the park, the tension did not subside. When the crowd did not disperse, one of the officers on duty used a chemical irritant spray to break up the group. Consequently, the New York Police Department announced that four officers suffered cuts to their faces and were rushed to the hospital.

The incident created a political crisis at the top of the city administration. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, known for his Democratic Socialist identity, could not prevent the reignition of long-standing tensions with police unions.

Detectives' Endowment Association President Scott Munro evaluated the events with the following words: "What we saw in Washington Square Park today was not harmless fun. It was a deliberate, disgraceful, and dangerous attack on uniformed officers."

Union representatives called on Mayor Mamdani to clearly condemn such acts of violence and to bring those responsible to justice.

As the repercussions of the incident continue, both the public and the political world are following the developments with concern. Authorities emphasize that steps must be taken to lower the rising social tension in the city and ensure public order.
