Statement from Devlet Bahçeli regarding stray dogs: 'How many hours will they put them to sleep?'

Responding to a question about the regulation concerning stray animals, Bahçeli said, "I suppose the matter will be addressed in Parliament or by the government.

Perhaps measures will be taken regarding municipalities. This will likely be put to an end, because it has reached very dangerous dimensions," he stated.

When it was pointed out that the regulation includes "putting to sleep" (euthanasia), Bahçeli said, "I do not fully know the proposed form of the issue. Who is proposing it and for what purpose?

When they put them to sleep, how will they be put to sleep, how much will they be put to sleep, who will put them to sleep? No one knows these things.

But those who made excessive comments about the love of animals yesterday have now reached a position of complaining about stray animals.

Responding to another question about the regulation, Bahçeli stated that it was not a subject he had examined, adding, "We listen to the discussions on television.

When a journalist remarked, "If you look into a dog's eyes, you cannot bear for it to be put to sleep," Bahçeli said, "The discussion is taking things to very different dimensions. Many things are happening in Turkey and in the world.

Many people are below the hunger threshold, unemployed, and destitute. They are facing many events. One must also wonder if those who remain distant from loving humans are turning to loving animals because of the difficulty in loving humans. That does not fall within my field."

When asked, "Have you ever had a pet?" Bahçeli replied, "No."
