Statement from İmamoğlu's lawyer regarding 'fake diploma investigation'

The judicial pressure on Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has emerged as the sole candidate in the primary process initiated by the CHP to determine its presidential candidate, continues. Most recently, an investigation was opened against İmamoğlu for the crime of "forgery of an official document" on the allegation that his university diploma is fake.

Kemal Polat, one of İmamoğlu's lawyers, made a new statement regarding the diploma crisis. Polat announced that they would pursue legal action regarding the claim that "the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has written a writ to Istanbul University for the cancellation of İmamoğlu's diploma."

Within the scope of the investigation, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office sent a letter to the Rectorate of Istanbul University, requesting an 'urgent response' regarding all documents related to the education İmamoğlu received at the university, the clear identities of those who carried out the procedures and actions regarding the acceptance of his lateral transfer, and whether similar lateral transfer procedures were carried out on the same dates.

Chief Public Prosecutor's Office sources stated that the reports claiming "a writ was written to Istanbul University for the cancellation of İmamoğlu's diploma" do not reflect the truth.

Ekrem İmamoğlu's lawyer, Kemal Polat, announced that they would exercise their legal rights regarding the claims in question.

Polat stated the following:

"The claim that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has written a writ for the cancellation of Mr. İmamoğlu's diploma is not true, and we will exercise our legal rights against this claim, which can be evaluated within the scope of 'publicly disseminating misleading information,' and against attempts that unrealistically cast suspicion on judicial authorities."
