Statement from the Ministry of National Defense on Kanal İstanbul! 'Detailed analysis is underway'

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's "crazy project", Kanal İstanbul, continues to see residential construction along its route, while the project's effects on security and defense planning have also been brought to the parliamentary agenda.

CHP İstanbul Deputy Sibel Yanıkömeroğlu drew attention to the potential consequences of Kanal İstanbul for Turkey's security and defense planning, in addition to its environmental impacts, and asked for the Ministry of National Defense's assessments.

QUESTIONS POSED REGARDING DEFENSE PLANNING

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, Yanıkömeroğlu, in a written parliamentary question submitted to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), raised the issue of whether an assessment has been made regarding the potential effects of the new waterway to be created in the west of Istanbul on the land connection between Thrace and Istanbul, military and logistical mobility, and defense planning.

Yanıkömeroğlu posed the following questions to Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler:

“Is there a security and defense impact analysis prepared by your ministry or at an inter-institutional level regarding the Kanal İstanbul Project? Is it a matter of concern that Kanal İstanbul might affect the land integrity between Thrace and Istanbul, military mobility, and logistical transit capacity? Have the opinions of the General Staff or the relevant force commands been sought regarding its effects on defense planning in the west of Istanbul, particularly along the Çatalca line?”

RESPONSE FROM MINISTER GÜLER

In his response to the parliamentary question, Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler stated, "A detailed analysis of the effects of the Kanal İstanbul Project on defense planning, security, logistics, and transportation is being conducted in coordination with the relevant units, and necessary measures are being taken."
