Striking July 15 claim from Mehmet Metiner: 'The July 16ers won'

Former AKP MP and Yeni Şafak columnist Mehmet Metiner has written a striking article regarding the July 15 coup attempt.

In his article titled "The July 16ers won...", Metiner claimed that some AKP members who disappeared on the night of July 15 gathered around AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the morning of July 16.

"If FETÖ has not been finished/cannot be finished today, one must look for the reason in the right place. Because the political wing of FETÖ has not been held to account," said Metiner, adding, "Because those who were pardoned thanks to intermediaries still maintain their presence in politics, the bureaucracy, and important layers of the state. They only changed their appearance. And we believed them." 

"THE JULY 15 SPIRIT IS GONE"

Stating that there is nothing left of the July 15 spirit, Metiner wrote, "While we were waiting for politics to take shape around the axis of the July 15 spirit, it fell victim to that very politics. The July 16ers won. And the July 16ers became both the determining actors in politics and directed politics. The result is obvious."

The relevant part of Metiner's article is as follows;

"I also hated that those who were not in the squares that night, and whose hiding holes we didn't even know, started posing on top of tanks starting from July 16.

I was disgusted by their speeches at democracy rallies with heroic airs.

They were prominent people.

They were known and recognized political actors.

Some were top party executives.

Some were ministers, MPs, and so on...

Almost all of them were people who showed up next to the Chief whenever he went somewhere.

They were people brought to those high offices they did not deserve thanks to the Chief.

But they were not there that night.

They were not there that night when the Chief went through a circle of death with his own honorable wife, children, and grandchildren.

They were not there when the Chief landed at Istanbul Airport.

They were not there while warplanes were raining death over the Chief.

Many of their phones were turned off.

And who knows which cellar those cowardly deserters of the fight had taken refuge in.

When the day dawned, they came out of their hiding places one by one.

The sun had risen for them on July 16.

They came running as if nothing had happened.

They clustered around the Chief again.

Because they had seen that those coup plotters had been defeated by the brave children of the nation.

I was disgusted as I saw them.

That hypocrisy of theirs.

That cowardice of theirs..."
