Striking testimonies emerge in the Can Polat murder investigation
Testimonies from suspects arrested in the Can Polat murder investigation have revealed how criminal organizations lure young people into their networks through social media connections, using promises of money and threats. The suspects alleged that Serhat Altun spoke of a plan to attack Engin Polat, conducted reconnaissance in Alaçatı, described his connection to the 'Daltonlar' gang, and that the murder weapon was transported via a taxi driver.
As the investigation continues into the murder of Can Polat, the cousin and bodyguard of Engin Polat, who was killed in the Çeşme district of İzmir on June 3, new testimonies added to the file have drawn attention. The accounts of the arrested suspects have brought to light allegations that criminal organizations reach out to young people via social media, directing them toward criminal activities through monetary offers and threats.
NEW TESTIMONIES ENTER THE INVESTIGATION FILE
The testimonies of the suspects arrested in the investigation into the murder of Can Polat, who was killed in Çeşme, Alaçatı, have emerged.
According to information shared by journalist İsmail Saymaz, the file includes the testimonies of Ali Arıkboğa, one of the arrested individuals, as well as Serhat Altun, who is alleged to be the gunman.
“I REACHED OUT THROUGH ADS ON INSTAGRAM”
19-year-old Ali Arıkboğa explained in his testimony that while he was experiencing financial difficulties, he looked at job postings on Instagram and, during this time, established contact with an account named “Grandboss.”
Arıkboğa claimed that the account was managed by a person who introduced himself as “Azat” and claimed to live in Spain. Stating that he initially rejected an offer to commit an armed assault, Arıkboğa alleged that he later received threats against his family.
“I WAS ASSIGNED FOR 150 THOUSAND TL”
In his testimony, Arıkboğa stated that he was assigned to shoot a person known as “Muhtar Necat” in the Bismil district of Diyarbakır in exchange for 150 thousand TL, and that after receiving the weapon delivered to him, he went to the given address and opened fire.
Explaining that he went to the airport after the incident, Arıkboğa stated that he later returned to Istanbul.
THE PROCESS FROM RESIDENCE TO HOTEL
According to Arıkboğa’s account, after returning to Istanbul, he stayed at his home in Sultangazi for a while but was redirected again.
Stating that he first stayed in a residence in Esenyurt for about two weeks, Arıkboğa noted that he was then placed in a hotel in Ataşehir.
Stating that he stayed in the same room as Serhat Altun for about a month there, Arıkboğa alleged that the hotel expenses were covered by a person Altun introduced as “Golfo.”
“WE WILL SHOOT ENGIN POLAT”
According to Arıkboğa’s testimony, Serhat Altun told him, “We will shoot Engin Polat; you will drive the motorcycle, and I will do the shooting.”
Explaining that Altun closely followed the social media posts of Engin and Dilan Polat during the time they stayed together, Arıkboğa claimed that the plan was changed because a motorcycle could not be found.
Arıkboğa said that after Altun went to İzmir on June 1, he learned about the Can Polat murder from social media and established the connection to the incident later.
ALLEGATION THAT HE SAID “I AM A MEMBER OF THE DALTONLAR”
The testimony of 21-year-old Eray Can Yılmaz, another person arrested in the investigation, was also included in the file.
Yılmaz alleged that after Serhat Altun arrived in Çeşme, he told him that he was a member of the Daltonlar criminal organization.
Stating in his testimony that Altun explained he joined the organization to earn money, Yılmaz also claimed that he spoke about plans for attacks on certain entertainment venues.
ALLEGED TO HAVE THREATENED HIS FRIEND WITH A GUN
According to Yılmaz’s account, Altun took out his gun in the dormitory where they were staying, held it to his friend’s neck, and threatened to kill both him and his family if he told anyone about what was discussed.
The testimony also alleged that Altun showed footage of a previous armed attack he had carried out on his phone.
Yılmaz also explained that Altun frequently checked Dilan Polat’s social media accounts and messaged various people.
ALLEGATION OF CONDUCTING RECONNAISSANCE AT THE HOTEL
According to Yılmaz’s testimony, Altun went to the hotel in Alaçatı where Engin and Dilan Polat were staying and conducted reconnaissance.
It was alleged that Altun, who reportedly asked for a photo of the vehicle at the hotel to be taken and sent to him, later spoke of an armed action plan against the Polat couple.
According to information in the investigation file, Altun left the dormitory on the day of the incident, taking his weapon and clothes with him.
TAXI DRIVER’S TESTIMONY ALSO IN THE FILE
The third person mentioned in the file was taxi driver İbrahim Halil Calban.
In his testimony, Calban said that he went to pick up a person to be taken to Ataşehir following a call from a foreign number, but that a bag was handed to him.
Claiming that he did not know what was inside the bag, Calban alleged that he went to the given address, delivered the bag, and had no connection to the incident afterward.
SAYMAZ: “CRIMINAL ORGANIZATIONS ARE NOW A SOURCE OF INCOME”
Journalist İsmail Saymaz stated in his article that the profiles of the four suspects arrested within the scope of the investigation are remarkable.
Saymaz pointed out that the majority of the arrested individuals consist of young people who are poor, have incomplete education, and do not have a regular job, noting that criminal organizations can easily recruit gunmen through social media.
