Suspected food poisoning in Istanbul... 7 detention orders issued

The investigation into the deaths of a family visiting from Germany due to suspected food poisoning in Istanbul's Fatih district is ongoing. Following the deaths of the mother and her two children, the case took a new turn after two other tourists staying at the same hotel were admitted to the hospital with complaints of nausea and vomiting.

The number of suspects detained in connection with the incident has increased from 3 to 7. Initially, street mussel vendor Y.D. was detained for "qualified fraud," while business owner E.E. and Turkish delight vendor F.T. were detained for various offenses.

The suspects are being questioned on charges of "causing death by negligence." The Istanbul Police Department continues to interrogate the suspects.

2 TOURISTS AT THE HOTEL HOSPITALIZED

Meanwhile, it was learned that the condition of two tourists, who are not in life-threatening danger, is concerning. Italian national Mustafa T. and Moroccan national Reda F. had arrived in Istanbul for tourism purposes on November 11 and 12.

Mustafa T. fell ill around 02:00 on November 14 and was taken to the hospital; his friend Reda F., who came to the room a short while later, also sought medical attention after feeling nauseous and was placed under observation. It was determined that the two tourists had only consumed water from a carboy at the hotel. While the condition of the two tourists is not critical, efforts are underway to identify the cause of the situation as soon as possible.

THEY DRANK WATER FROM A CARBOY

Investigations showed that while the deceased family and the two tourists consumed the same food, the only common factor was the water consumed from the carboy. The Crime Scene Investigation Branch of the Istanbul Police Department conducted a detailed inspection of the hotel and took water samples. Security camera footage is also being examined.

PEST CONTROL HAD BEEN PERFORMED AT THE HOTEL

Teams from the Provincial Health Directorate and the Fatih District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry conducted inspections regarding pest control operations performed at the hotel. The inspections revealed that the pest control procedure at the hotel was carried out only on the ground floor and in a single room, and that the substances used contained some suspicious components. Authorities are focusing on the possibility that certain substances used in agricultural areas may be harmful to human health.

TOURISTS AND THE FAMILY STAYED ON DIFFERENT FLOORS

According to the examinations, it was learned that the floor where the tourists stayed and the floor where the deceased family stayed were different; the tourists were staying on the 4th floor, while the family was staying on the 1st floor. The teams have sent the samples they collected to the laboratory for analysis.
