Retired police officer had lost his life: Suspicion of 'The Ghost' mafia leader Rövşen Caniyev in the attack

Müslim SARIYAR/12punto.com.tr EXCLUSIVE REPORT

Magamet Kurbanovi, the nephew of Lotu Quli, as well as retired police officer Mehmet Acermen and İsrafil Orujov, were injured by bullets that struck their bodies.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle they used to flee near the scene after the incident and escaped in another car.

Following the incident, Istanbul police conducted an investigation and detained 8 people, 3 of whom are Uzbek nationals and 5 of whom are Azerbaijani nationals. After their interrogations, 5 people were referred to the prosecutor's office and subsequently arrested and sent to prison.

3 people were released under judicial control. There is a strong possibility that the suspects who carried out the attack may be men of the Azerbaijani mafia leader known as 'The Ghost,' Rövşen Caniyev, who was killed in Beşiktaş on August 18, 2016.

In the incident that occurred on September 19, 2023, around 23:00 in the Kavaklı neighborhood of Beylikdüzü, an armed attack was carried out on a car containing Magamed Kurbanovi, the nephew of Lotu Quli—who was assassinated in Antalya in 2020—and retired police officer Yılmaz Demir lost his life in the event.

Retired police officer Mehmet Acerman, Magamed Kurbanovi, and İsrapil Orujov were injured in the attack.

After the incident, the attackers abandoned the car they used in the same district and disappeared; a search of the abandoned vehicle yielded 4 handguns, 2 of which were automatic.

8 FOREIGN NATIONALS DETAINED

Following the attack, upon notification by the Beylikdüzü District Police Department teams who arrived at the scene, the Public Security Branch's Murder Bureau, the Organized Crime Branch, and the Counter-Terrorism Branch were also dispatched to the scene.

After taking statements from the injured individuals in the vehicle, the teams conducted a multi-faceted investigation and examined numerous cameras in the area where the suspects abandoned the vehicle used in the attack and fled.

Following the review of camera footage, police conducted simultaneous operations in several districts of Istanbul. In the operation where 8 foreign nationals were detained, Azerbaijani nationals G.T., Z.Q., and A.A., along with Uzbek nationals Z.D. and O.B., were arrested and sent to prison. It was learned that 3 foreign nationals were released under judicial control conditions.

IS THE ATTACK A CONTINUATION OF A SETTLEMENT?

Azerbaijani mafia leader Rövşen Caniyev, known as 'The Ghost,' was killed in an armed attack at the hotel where he was staying in Beşiktaş on August 18, 2016. 65 empty shell casings were found at the scene. Lotu Quli, who was alleged to be the instigator of that attack, was also killed in an armed attack in Antalya in 2020.

Following these attacks, Elnur Gasimov, who was learned to be a man of Rövşen Caniyev, was killed in an armed attack while walking on the street with his friends in Ataşehir, Istanbul, on October 26, 2022.

There is a strong possibility that the suspects caught following the attack on the car containing Magamed Kurbanovi, the nephew of Lotu Quli, in Beylikdüzü a month ago, may be men of Rövşen Caniyev and that this may be a continuation of the mafia settling of scores.
