Fourteen teachers who were continuing their hunger strike and had gathered in front of the Çankaya gate of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) today were detained in handcuffs behind their backs.
CHP İstanbul Deputy Suat Özçağdaş, who arrived at the Çankaya gate where the intervention took place, emphasized that the teachers only wanted to express their grievances and reacted against the Ministry of Interior and the Ankara Governorship.
Özçağdaş stated the following: "These are teachers. You are using violence against teachers. They wanted to make their voices heard; look at the treatment they are receiving. There is constant oppression here. People are being dragged on the ground. This country cannot prevent school attacks or similar issues by oppressing its teachers. We are tired of these actions by the AK Party."
WHAT ARE THE TEACHERS' DEMANDS?
The main demands highlighted in the teachers' protests are as follows:
• Re-regulation of the base salary right for teachers working in the private sector,
• Resolution of the grievances experienced by 1,611 teachers affected by the interview process,
• Abolition of the 10-month fixed-term contracts common in private educational institutions and a transition to indefinite-term contracts.
