The absence of that name from Erdoğan's new constitution commission draws attention! Striking behind-the-scenes details on the 50+1 rule...

Nefes Gazetesi columnist Nuray Babacan brought the discussions within the AKP regarding the new constitution efforts to her column. The fact that Mehmet Uçum and his team were not included in the new constitution commission has stirred up the political corridors. While Nuray Babacan interpreted this as a "subtle operation," she wrote that the issue of lowering the 50+1 percent rule for presidential elections to 40+1 percent has come back onto the agenda.

The absence of that name from Erdoğan's new constitution commission draws attention! Striking behind-the-scenes details on the 50+1 rule...

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan formed a commission for the new constitution, and it drew attention that no one from the Presidential Legal Policies Board was included in said commission.

Nefes Gazetesi columnist Nuray Babacan brought the constitutional debates within the AKP to her column today.

Regarding the fact that Mehmet Uçum and his team, who frequently give messages about constitutional amendments, were not included in the constitution commission, Babacan stated: "If you look at the newly formed AKP Constitution Commission, you will see that a 'subtle operation' has been carried out. There is no one from the Presidential Legal Policies Board in the commission, which consists of representatives from the headquarters and the party group."

Babacan conveyed that this situation is considered interesting within the AKP and noted the following:

"According to party insiders, it is said that Uçum told his close circle that even if they remain outside the commission, they are working on the constitution as a board."

WILL THE 50+1 RULE BE LOWERED TO 40+1?

Continuing her article, Babacan shared the behind-the-scenes information that "there are those who say there will be articles aimed at revising the Presidential Government System and making it easier to get elected, and there are also those who deny it." After reminding that just a year ago, there were those within the party who expressed that the presidential election threshold should be lowered from 50 plus 1 to 40 plus 1, she wrote: "It is as if the prophecy of the AKP staff who said, 'This will be the first issue we discuss after the local elections,' has come true. We will see together if this is part of a new plan."

Arguing that the AKP occasionally opens the constitution for debate to change the agenda, Babacan assessed: "Another reality is that whenever the AKP wants to change the agenda and draw attention elsewhere, it opens a constitutional package. One of the three arguments they use in this regard is the Constitution. 'Either the fight against foreign powers, the fight against terrorism, or getting rid of the coup constitution...' There are not a few who link the latest efforts to this. It is unknown whether results will be achieved, but it is certain that it will occupy politics..."
