The draft had reached Parliament: Important behind-the-scenes news on the stray animal law!

The draft law on stray animals prepared by the AKP, which has become a major topic on Turkey's agenda, has reached the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

The provision in the draft that envisions the euthanasia (killing) of stray animals has sparked public backlash.

Gazete Pencere columnist Nuray Babacan, in her article titled “Parliamentary work will be extended, stray animals may wait”, stated that the regulation on stray animals might be left for the new legislative term.

The relevant section from Babacan's article is as follows:

“Realizing that the legislative proposals on the agenda will not be completed in time, the ruling party plans to extend the work of the TBMM until the end of July. The most debated law in this period will be the package that also includes tax regulations. The package contains everything from energy to forestry, and from mining to renewable energy. It is claimed that the legislative proposal, which includes controversial articles regarding the collection, sterilization, and euthanasia of stray animals, may be postponed to the next term.”
