The flood disaster in Istanbul was an accident waiting to happen

Two citizens lost their lives in Istanbul, which was surrendered to floods following the heavy rainfall that occurred the night before last.

In a statement made by the Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), it was stated that the main reason for the floods experienced in the city last night was the construction that has been carried out for many years in areas close to creek beds and where the risk of flooding is high.

"IT WAS KNOWN TO BE A RISKY AREA"

In its social media post, the IPA included the following statements:

"The section between the Onurkent and Kayaşehir Merkez stations, which is the 2nd stage of the Kirazlı (Bağcılar)-Kayaşehir Merkez (M3) metro line, was completed and opened to service by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure on April 8, 2023.

It is known that the Kayaşehir Merkez station of the line is located near the Hasanoğlu Creek and in a flood-risk area."

OPENED IN 2020

The Başakşehir Public Library, which opened in 2019, is unfortunately also located on the Fener Creek, a tributary of the Nakkaş Creek, and it is currently known that there is a risk of flooding.

The Çam and Sakura City Hospital, which is located near the Nakkaş Creek and is at risk of flooding, was opened in 2020.
