The PKK terrorist organization's disarmament process: Security sources address 'bargaining' claims

In the new opening process initiated by MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli and continued with the call for terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan to lay down arms, the terrorist organization PKK has laid down its arms in Sulaymaniyah with a group of 30 people.

The organization's disarmament schedule for the next phase of the process and what will happen afterward are among the top issues of public curiosity.

According to a report by the pro-government newspaper Türkiye Gazetesi, which cites security units and AKP sources, it is claimed that Turkey is following a unique method in the PKK terrorist organization's disarmament process and that this method is being called the "Turkey Model." In this context, it was stated that the process is being conducted without any negotiations and that third parties such as external observers or mediators are not participating in the process. Furthermore, it was emphasized that the goal is to complete this process within a few months.

According to the reports, this model contains significant differences from examples in other countries. It was noted that within the scope of the "Turkey Model," no bargaining has been entered into with the organization, and no outside observers or mediators have been invited. Security sources shared the information: "Without disarmament, neither political nor legal topics have been brought to the agenda. Furthermore, it is aimed to complete the process without wasting time so that an environment open to provocations does not form."

AKP sources expressed a similar approach. While pointing out that there are examples in other countries where third parties generally monitor the process, it was stated that Turkey has not preferred this method. In a statement from the AKP wing, it was said: "The state's eyes will directly monitor and report. There is no third eye outside of the state mechanism."

Security sources suggested that the experiences gained from the past resolution process have laid the groundwork for this process. Stating that no official bargaining has been entered into with the organization from the beginning of the process, the following assessment was made:

"From the beginning, no room was given for any bargaining. The determination that no steps would be taken until arms were laid down and the organization disbanded itself has been maintained. There is no other path left for the PKK, and it has reached the point of laying down its arms."
