Timur Cihantimur, who caused the death of Oğuz Murat Aci in Istanbul while driving without a license and was later apprehended in Boston, USA, has been attacked.
The details of the assault were included in an "Urgent Release Request" petition submitted to the court by Cihantimur's lawyer.
In the petition, lawyer Victoria Kelleher stated that Cihantimur was attacked and beaten by 3 children, received punches to his face, was struck on the head, had his lip split, and his teeth broken.
Providing an explanation for the motive behind the attack in the petition, the lawyer stated that Cihantimur was attacked for no reason while waiting in a phone queue.
Lawyer Kelleher added to the court petition that the attack occurred when another inmate stated that he would use the phone himself when it was Cihantimur's turn.
"NOT A SAFE PLACE FOR CIHANTIMUR"
In her petition, lawyer Kelleher requested that the detainee Timur Cihantimur be released immediately and placed under the supervision of his aunt and uncle.
In the petition, lawyer Kelleher stated that Timur Cihantimur could not make phone calls to his father, Bülent Cihantimur, and noted that the facility does not facilitate international calls. Kelleher emphasized that this is causing serious psychological problems for her client.
Kelleher stated in the petition, "This facility, which houses detainees not released on bail due to serious crimes in Newark, is not a safe place for Cihantimur. We urgently request Cihantimur's release, taking into account new concerns based on changing conditions."
WHAT HAPPENED?
On March 1, at approximately 23:50, in Istanbul's Eyüpsultan district, 29-year-old Oğuz Murat Aci lost his life and multiple people were injured when Timur Cihantimur, while driving a luxury car, struck 3 ATV-type vehicles parked on the side of the road due to a breakdown.
Following the accident, the unlicensed driver Timur Cihantimur was taken by his mother, Eylem Tok, first to Egypt and then to the USA. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which launched an investigation into the incident, issued an arrest warrant for mother Eylem Tok, who was determined to have flown from Istanbul to Egypt on March 2 at approximately 03:50, on charges of "aiding and abetting a criminal," and for Timur Cihantimur on charges of "causing death and injury by negligence," and requested the issuance of a red notice for them.
Turkey requested the extradition of the mother and son from the USA last month. Timur Cihantimur and Eylem Tok were apprehended by police in Boston, USA, during an operation on Friday, June 14.
