The Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) issued a statement regarding the cancellation of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s diploma by Istanbul University. The statement noted, "If they are having the diploma of a person whose candidacy is on the agenda for an election to be held in two years cancelled, it means they are exhausted."
In the statement made by the TKP, it was stated that "after journalists and politicians, an operation has now been carried out on a diploma," and it was expressed that the political power is attacking the right to vote and be elected.
Pointing out that Turkey must rid itself of this mentality and the order of holdings and religious sects, the statement said, "While the Communist Party of Turkey continues its struggle in this direction, it will continue to stand against the usurpation of the right to vote and be elected, the narrowing of the political sphere, and the obstruction of the working people's participation in politics."
The full text of the statement is as follows:
"After journalists and politicians, an operation has now been carried out on a diploma. The political power is attacking politics and the right to vote and be elected with a violence that will render its most boasted-about “election successes” null and void.
If a government that implements policies that further impoverish a vast majority of the population by saying “our priority is the fight against inflation” is having the diploma of a person whose candidacy is on the agenda for an election to be held in two years cancelled, it means it is exhausted.
Turkey must rid itself of this mentality and the order of holdings and religious sects that sustains this mentality.
While the Communist Party of Turkey continues its struggle in this direction, it will continue to stand against the usurpation of the right to vote and be elected, the narrowing of the political sphere, and the obstruction of the working people's participation in politics."
