Tomorrow is the last day for resignations to run in local elections

In the decision of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) published in the Official Gazette on October 27, it was determined that the start date for the election to be held on Sunday, March 31, 2024, is January 1, 2024, and that those who wish to be candidates must leave their positions by 5:00 PM on December 1.

In this context, public officials, members of the judiciary, provincial and district executives of political parties, members of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), as well as those serving on the boards of directors and supervisory boards of professional organizations with the status of public institutions, unions, public banks, supreme unions and their parent organizations, and the enterprises or partnerships they participate in, must leave their positions by the end of the workday tomorrow.

According to legal regulations, for public officials, submitting a resignation or retirement petition by the specified date is considered as leaving the position.

THOSE WHO DO NOT NEED TO RESIGN

According to decisions made by the YSK in previous years, there is no requirement for some individuals to leave their positions in order to be candidates.

Accordingly, deputy mayors appointed from among municipal council members will be able to run as candidates without resigning from these positions.

Members of parliament, mayors, members of provincial and municipal councils, and neighborhood heads (muhtars) are also not required to resign in order to file their candidacy or be nominated.

Members of parliament who become candidates will have to choose which position they will hold within 15 days after being elected if they are elected as mayor; otherwise, they will be deemed to have rejected the newly elected position.
