Traffic gridlocked in Istanbul following earthquake
Following a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul, traffic congestion across the city reached 76 percent, and long queues formed at gas stations.
Some Istanbul residents who left their homes after the earthquake chose to take to the roads in their vehicles. Traffic is moving with difficulty on certain sections of the D-100 highway and the TEM Motorway, as well as on main arteries and streets throughout the city. Heavy traffic is observed in both directions at the entrance to the 15 July Martyrs Bridge.
On the European side, traffic congestion continues intermittently on the D-100 highway in the direction of Edirne from Zincirlikuyu to Beylikdüzü, while in the direction of Ankara, traffic congestion starting from Beylikdüzü extends to the entrance of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge.
On the Anatolian side, traffic congestion is seen in the Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Ataşehir, and Ümraniye areas.
According to data from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Cep Trafik application, as of 14:17, traffic congestion was measured at 74 percent on the Anatolian side, 78 percent on the European side, and 76 percent across the city as a whole.
