Traffic penalty system changed: Speeding will cost dearly!

Significant changes have been made to traffic rules in Turkey. With the new regulation accepted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and published in the Official Gazette, administrative fines for speeding violations have been reorganized. Penalties will no longer be applied based on the percentage of the speed limit exceeded, but rather according to established kilometer ranges.

While the previously used percentage-based excess system has been abolished, speeding violations will now be evaluated using a newly created 9-tier scale. Furthermore, speed rules are applied under two separate categories: "within residential areas" and "outside residential areas."

Drivers who exceed the speed limit by 6 to 10 kilometers per hour within residential areas will pay a fine of 2,000 TL, while those who exceed it by 11 to 15 kilometers per hour will pay 4,000 TL. Penalty amounts increase incrementally for those who exceed the limits further, with fines reaching up to 30,000 TL for those who exceed the speed limit by more than 66 kilometers per hour.

Outside residential areas, drivers traveling 11-15 kilometers per hour above the speed limit will be fined 2,000 TL. This amount rises to 30,000 TL if the limit is exceeded by a higher margin. The starting point for speed violations in both categories was explained with examples: For instance, traveling at 56 kilometers per hour on an urban road with a 50 kilometer per hour speed limit, or at 101 kilometers per hour on a highway with a 90 kilometer per hour limit, will be considered a violation.

The changes are not limited to monetary fines. In cases where the speed limit is exceeded beyond certain ranges, drivers' licenses may also be confiscated. Drivers whose licenses are temporarily confiscated for 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on the severity of the violation, will be required to undergo a psychotechnical examination to retrieve their licenses.

With the new system, the aim is to ensure that drivers pay more attention to speed limits and to increase the deterrent effect. The implementation aims to reduce traffic accidents and rule violations.
