TRNC at the polls for presidential election

Excitement is high in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for the presidential election. Citizens are heading to the polls for the 9th time to determine their president. Voters began casting their ballots at 08:00 this morning, and the process will continue until 18:00 this evening.

A total of 777 ballot boxes have been set up across the TRNC, with 218 thousand 313 voters eligible to cast their ballots. To be elected president, candidates must secure an absolute majority of the valid votes. If any candidate receives 50+1 percent of the vote in the first round, they will be elected president. Otherwise, the two candidates with the most votes will compete in a second round to be held 7 days later.

A total of 7 candidates, 5 of whom are independent, are competing in the election. The candidates are listed on the ballot as follows: Osman Zorba (Cyprus Socialist Party) 1, Tufan Erhürman (Republican Turkish Party) 2, Arif Salih Kırdağ (Independent) 3, Ahmet Boran (Independent) 4, Mehmet Hasgüler (Independent) 5, İbrahim Yazıcı (Independent) 6, and Ersin Tatar (Independent) 8. However, Hüseyin Gürlek, who was in 7th place, announced that he has withdrawn his candidacy in favor of Ersin Tatar.
