Trump's Jay Clayton move: He will handle critical cases concerning Turkey

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Jay Clayton for the position of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Clayton drew attention for his experience in financial crimes during his tenure as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York is a prominent institution known for its fight against financial crimes and its independent operation from the Department of Justice. This office has handled many critical cases in the past that were linked to Turkey and Turkish individuals.

These include significant files such as the Rıza Sarraf investigation launched in 2015, the trial of former Halkbank Deputy General Manager Mehmet Hakan Atilla, the Halkbank case, and the corruption case of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

WHO IS JAY CLAYTON?

Clayton, 58, was born in the U.S. state of Virginia and grew up in Pennsylvania. After beginning his university education at Lafayette College, where he was a member of the football team, Clayton transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in engineering.

Throughout his career, Clayton served as legal counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)—which he was later appointed to chair—the Federal Reserve, and many Wall Street financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs.

After leading the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2017 to 2020, Clayton returned to the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, where he provided consulting on financial regulations and government investigations.

He also serves on the board of directors of the major private equity firm Apollo Global Management. 

Clayton's nomination requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate. However, there are doubts due to his lack of experience in criminal prosecution. 

During President Joe Biden's administration, the office was led by Damian Williams, a long-time prosecutor in the office who previously headed the district's securities and commodities task force.

Williams' office also secured the conviction of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez on bribery charges and charged New York City Mayor Eric Adams with bribery.
