TÜİK contradicts Ali Yerlikaya: Significant discrepancy in earthquake death toll

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced its 2023 Death and Cause of Death Statistics.

Accordingly, while the number of deaths was 505,269 in 2022, it increased by 4.1 percent in 2023 to 525,814. In 2023, 53.9 percent of the deceased were men and 46.1 percent were women.

The province with the highest crude death rate in 2023 was Adıyaman, with 18.0 per thousand. This was followed by Hatay with 17.1 per thousand, Kahramanmaraş with 14.8 per thousand, and Kastamonu with 10.6 per thousand. The province with the lowest crude death rate was Şırnak, with 2.3 per thousand. This was followed by Hakkari with 2.5 per thousand, and Batman and Van with 3.0 per thousand.

COVID-19 RELATED DEATH RATES

The number of people who lost their lives due to Covid-19 decreased from 4.4% in 2022 to 0.3% in 2023.

45,784 PEOPLE DIED IN THE EARTHQUAKES

The rate of deaths due to external causes of injury and poisoning, which includes earthquake-related deaths, was 12.3 percent. The number of Turkish citizens who died in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred on February 6 was 45,784.

DEATHS DUE TO CIRCULATORY SYSTEM DISEASES RANK FIRST

According to the data, when deaths were examined by cause, circulatory system diseases ranked first in 2023 with 33.4 percent. This cause of death was followed by all benign and malignant tumors at 15.0 percent, and respiratory system diseases at 13.2 percent.

When deaths due to circulatory system diseases were examined by sub-causes, it was observed that 42.4% of these deaths were due to ischemic heart diseases, 24.1% to other heart diseases, and 18.6% to cerebrovascular diseases.

When deaths due to circulatory system diseases were examined by province, it was observed that the province with the highest death rate due to these diseases in 2023 was Çanakkale with 50.2%. This was followed by Kırşehir with 45.6%, Balıkesir with 44.7%, and Kırıkkale with 43.0%. The province with the lowest death rate due to these diseases was Adıyaman with 10.9%. This was followed by Hatay with 12.6%, Kahramanmaraş with 13.5%, and Kilis with 27.8%.

DEATHS DUE TO TUMORS

When deaths due to benign and malignant tumors were examined by sub-causes, it was observed that 29.2% of deaths were due to malignant tumors of the larynx, trachea, bronchus, and lung, and 7.7% were due to malignant tumors of the colon, as well as lymphoid and hematopoietic malignant tumors.

When deaths due to benign and malignant tumors were examined by province, it was observed that the province with the highest death rate due to these diseases in 2023 was Tunceli with 22.0%. This was followed by Ardahan with 21.0%, Erzurum with 20.9%, and Van with 20.6%. The province with the lowest death rate due to these diseases was Adıyaman with 3.4%. This was followed by Hatay with 3.5%, Kahramanmaraş with 4.1%, and Gaziantep with 8.8%.

INFANT MORTALITY RATE WAS 10 PER THOUSAND

The number of infant deaths was 9,575 in 2023, compared to 9,555 in 2022. The infant mortality rate, which expresses the number of infant deaths per thousand live births, was 10.0 per thousand in 2023, compared to 9.2 per thousand in 2022.

The under-five mortality rate, which expresses the probability of dying within the first five years after birth, was 14.5 per thousand in 2023, compared to 11.2 in 2022.
