Turkey enters the nuclear energy era: First electricity from Akkuyu by year-end

A historic turning point in Turkey's energy vision is approaching. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that one of the most important stages of the commissioning schedule for the first unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been successfully completed. Stating that they aim to move Turkey into the nuclear energy league, Bayraktar gave the good news that the first production will be realized by the end of the year.

In a statement made via his social media account, Minister Bayraktar drew attention to the role of nuclear energy in Turkey's future energy supply security. Emphasizing that they will make zero-emission, uninterrupted, and environmentally friendly nuclear energy one of the strongest sources in the country's energy basket, Bayraktar stated that this step is a critical move on the path to full independence in energy.

2050 TARGET IS 20 THOUSAND MEGAWATTS: SINOP AND THRACE ARE NEXT

Expressing that Turkey's nuclear energy journey will not be limited to Akkuyu, Minister Bayraktar also shared the roadmap for the coming period. Noting that in addition to the new nuclear power plants planned to be established in Sinop and Thrace, they will also add small modular reactors (SMRs) with modern technology to their production portfolio, Bayraktar used the following expressions:

"With this strong vision, we will not stop at Akkuyu; in addition to the new power plants we plan for Sinop and Thrace, we will also add small modular reactors to our production portfolio. By reaching a nuclear capacity of 20 thousand megawatts by 2050, we will march with determination toward the goal of a fully independent Turkey in energy."
