Turkey's Permanent Representative to the EU Kaymakcı: The EU's approach is unacceptable

Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı, Turkey's Permanent Representative to the EU, reacted to statements made regarding Turkey during the European Parliament (EP) General Assembly meeting held in Strasbourg, France, between March 31 and April 3.

Kaymakcı stated, "In this difficult period the EU is going through, we find it strange that the EP is attempting to divert attention elsewhere instead of facing its own problems.

It is also concerning for the future of the European Union that the European Parliament, whose representational capacity and legitimacy are increasingly diminishing, has turned into a platform where irrational and reckless views are expressed.

Indeed, these meetings have provided an opportunity for extremist and racist groups from all walks of life who aim to distance Turkey from the EU."

Addressing the statement by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during one of the meetings that she had canceled her planned visit to Turkey, Kaymakcı said, "We evaluate this as a populist move made with political motives, aimed at satisfying certain segments within the EP.

Commissioner Kos's erroneous stance, which extends to influencing the Turkish judiciary, is incompatible with the European Commission's position, which should be impartial.

In any case, it is unacceptable for the EU to adopt an approach that would undermine judicial independence and the principle of the rule of law in our country.

It is contradictory and lacks credibility for certain circles, who refrain from making any comments regarding judicial processes in some EU member states such as France and Romania, to express opinions on some legal processes in Turkey that have not yet been concluded," he said.
