Two Greek tourists who unfurled a Byzantine flag in Hagia Sophia released

A notable incident occurred at Hagia Sophia on April 9 at around 15:20. Greek citizens Mazis Michael, 35, and Kostantina Mazi, 42, unfurled a Byzantine flag featuring a double-headed eagle and the phrase "Either become Orthodox or die" inside the historic structure, which is used as a mosque. The suspects, who recorded their actions with a mobile phone camera, allegedly created a provocation in the environment with symbols carrying religious and ideological intent.

Following the incident, the two tourists were detained by security guards. After the investigation, Mazis Michael and Kostantina Mazi were referred to the courthouse on charges of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility or insulting them" and were subsequently ordered to be remanded in custody.

The case of the two Greek citizens, who had been in prison for approximately two months, was re-evaluated. The court issued a release order for both individuals. Thus, Mazis Michael and Kostantina Mazi were released following their period of detention.
