UK Foreign Secretary Cameron: 'We must secure a lasting ceasefire'

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, in a video message shared on his X account, stated, "We must seize this opportunity to bring an end to this conflict, not just for now, but permanently."

Pointing out that Hamas must first accept the proposal in this regard, Cameron assessed, "This means the release of hostages and the flow of aid into Gaza, as we have long called for."

Cameron emphasized that after the fighting stops, a sustainable and lasting ceasefire and a political solution process must begin, and included the following remarks:

"This can only happen if everyone plays their part. It is very clear that many conditions must be met. It is clear that Gaza cannot be governed by Hamas and that Israel needs security guarantees. It is also very clear that we must support the Palestinian Authority and define the parameters of what a Palestinian state will look like."

Cameron also drew attention to the fact that the ultimate goal is an Israel living in security and a Palestinian state belonging to the Palestinians.

Stating that the opportunity of the new proposal must be seized to stop the fighting, fulfill the conditions for a sustainable ceasefire, and begin the political process, Cameron shared his view: "Everyone must play their part. First and foremost, Hamas must accept this deal. The eyes of the world should be on Hamas. Everyone calling for a ceasefire should know that if Hamas accepts this generous offer, there will be a ceasefire."

Cameron stated that Arab countries must do their part for security in the region, and that countries like the UK must continue to support the Palestinian Authority.

Foreign Secretary Cameron noted that there are many more steps to be taken, but that this proposal must be accepted today.

Biden, in his speech at the White House yesterday, stated that Israel had presented a new three-phase ceasefire proposal, saying that the first phase envisions a 6-week ceasefire during which Israel would withdraw from populated areas in Gaza and some of the hostages held by the parties would be released.

Biden explained that in the second phase, where negotiations for a permanent end to the conflict would take place, all remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, would be released, Israel would withdraw from Gaza (as in the first phase), the temporary ceasefire would turn into a permanent end to hostilities, and if the parties reach an agreement on all issues in the second phase and the ceasefire becomes permanent, the third phase would begin, during which the reconstruction process of Gaza would be on the agenda and the bodies of any remaining deceased hostages would be returned.
