Ümit Özdağ's 'Imralı' commentary: 'Too good to be true'
Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, who is being tried while in detention, stated in his assessment of Imralı from prison that the PKK laying down its arms without any concessions is "too good to be true."
Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, who has been held in detention at Marmara Prison in Silivri for some time, answered questions from Reuters regarding the current agenda.
Özdağ stated that he does not believe the PKK will disband without receiving anything in return, adding that this is "too good to be true."
Regarding the People's Alliance's statements that the PKK would disband, specifically the claim that "the PKK-YPG-PYD will also lay down their arms and disband. Öcalan, the PKK, and DEM are not putting forward any conditions in exchange for this dissolution," Özdağ said the following:
"If this were true, it would be perfect. In other words, a regional terrorist organization like the PKK, a terrorist organization with an extensive infrastructure in Europe, is surrendering unconditionally and disbanding itself. It is too good to be true."
Pointing to Öcalan's statement regarding the "political and legal arrangements that need to be made" for the PKK to lay down its arms, Özdağ posed the following questions:
"It is unclear what these are. What changes will be made to the Constitution and laws in exchange for the PKK disbanding itself? Will there be an amnesty for PKK members, and if so, how will it happen? The People's Alliance says 'Öcalan's statement covers the YPG,' while the YPG says 'it does not.' How will this problem be solved?"
EARLY ELECTION STATEMENT
Özdağ was also asked about his expectations regarding an early election. Özdağ replied, "An early election is only possible if the negotiations with Öcalan result in a constitutional amendment."
