UNSC adopts Gaza resolution

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted on the resolution, which was the 5th to be submitted regarding the humanitarian situation in the city since Israel's attacks on Gaza began on October 7, following the vetoing of previous attempts.

The resolution was adopted by the 15-member council.

The resolution, submitted by Malta, calls for "humanitarian pauses" in hostilities rather than a humanitarian ceasefire, and demands the establishment of corridors in the Gaza Strip in accordance with international humanitarian law.

IT HAD BEEN VETOED 4 TIMES

The UNSC had addressed 4 draft resolutions regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza following October 7.

First, the draft resolution submitted by Russia on October 17, which called for a "humanitarian ceasefire," was voted against by the US, UK, France, and Japan. Following this, a draft resolution submitted by Brazil calling for "pauses in hostilities" was vetoed by the US on October 18.

Later, on October 26, a US resolution mentioning the "right of countries to self-defense" was vetoed by Russia and China, and on the same day, a draft resolution by Russia containing a call for a humanitarian ceasefire was vetoed by the US and the UK.

Although the resolutions did not pass, 121 countries voted "yes" to a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza at the 193-member UN General Assembly.
