US judge rules Rümeysa Öztürk to be tried in Vermont

Massachusetts District Judge Denise Casper stated in a report prepared after reviewing the lawyers' petitions that it is appropriate for Öztürk, who is being held in Louisiana, to be tried in the state of Vermont.

Expressing that Vermont is the most suitable location among the options for Öztürk's trial, Casper cited in her report that the Turkish student was held in Vermont throughout the night of March 25, when she was detained and her lawyers filed an urgent petition with the court.

Casper also included in her report the opinion that Öztürk's lawyers cannot be blamed for submitting their petitions to the Massachusetts court, as they were unable to learn their client's whereabouts.

Following the receipt of the petition on the night of March 25, Judge Denise Casper issued an order preventing Öztürk from being moved out of Massachusetts without notification, and a few days later, while evaluating the government's jurisdictional issues, she announced a second order prohibiting Öztürk's deportation.
