US to fund project: Syrians to receive waste management training

Through the US-funded "Project for Ensuring Social Cohesion Through an Inclusive Zero Waste Approach in Municipalities Hosting Refugees," Syrians with refugee status will receive "waste training."

US TRANSFERRED 8.5 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET

According to a report in the Türkiye newspaper, known for its proximity to the government, the US Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration has transferred a budget of 8 million 510 thousand dollars to the project, which aims to resolve tensions and problems that may arise between Syrians and host communities due to inadequate waste management. One of the goals is to reduce the amount of waste accumulating in landfills by separating and recycling waste at the source.

Within the scope of the project, the situation in cities that show parallels with the earthquake zone will first be identified. For this reason, Kilis, Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Mersin, İzmir, and Hatay have been selected as pilot cities for the project's implementation area. Within the framework of the three-year project, municipalities will be provided with necessary equipment support following an assessment of the current situation. Waste collectors will be registered by the municipalities. Payments made per unit of waste will be digitized.

Mobile markets will be created for cards loaded with funds. Refugee-focused services will be provided. Training sessions on zero waste will be organized. Additionally, training activities will be conducted for seasonal workers. Cooperation will be established with cooperatives regarding waste management.
