A neighborhood in Hatay has vanished: Only 35 families remain out of 15,000

Aerial footage captured in Hatay on the first anniversary of the disaster of the century reveals the transformation caused by the earthquake. The open spaces left after the removal of debris and the few buildings that managed to remain standing have created a ghost-town-like appearance.

As the anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş approaches, Hatay was filmed from the air.

In the city, where dozens of neighborhoods have almost completely disappeared, the spray-painted signs on the buildings that managed to remain standing, reading “Under litigation and slightly damaged,” drew attention.

Aerial footage shows that most of the buildings damaged by the earthquake have been demolished.

ONLY 35 FAMILIES REMAIN OUT OF 15,000

The headman of Emek Neighborhood, who experienced the February 6 earthquake in Hatay, said the following:

“More than half of the neighborhood was destroyed. There are approximately 1,500 deaths in my neighborhood alone. Currently, there are 35 families in the neighborhood. There were about 15,000 families in my neighborhood. We previously had 5,000 voters in our neighborhood; now we have around 3,000 voters left. God willing, our neighborhood will be rebuilt in its place. I do not want anyone to lose hope; I experienced the earthquake in my neighborhood and I am still in my neighborhood. We have not lost our hope, and we will not lose it. Our state has not left us alone since the first day.”
