Armed attack on AKP Küçükçekmece Mayoral Candidate Aziz Yeniay

AKP Küçükçekmece Mayoral Candidate Aziz Yeniay was targeted in an armed attack during election campaign activities in the Kanarya neighborhood. It has been reported that one citizen was critically injured in the attack, which was carried out with long-barreled weapons.

President and AKP Chairman Erdoğan shared a statement regarding the attack on social media.

Erdoğan stated, "I condemn the armed attack carried out during the election campaign of our AK Party and People's Alliance Küçükçekmece Mayoral Candidate Aziz Yeniay, and I wish a speedy recovery to our citizen who was critically injured.

A comprehensive investigation into the attack has been launched immediately. We will never allow those who cannot stomach the election process proceeding in a healthy manner befitting our democracy to poison the process. 

No attack targeting our democracy, our unity, or our solidarity will achieve its goal."

AKP Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate Murat Kurum condemned the attack on social media. In his post, Kurum stated, "I condemn the attack carried out with long-barreled weapons while our Küçükçekmece Mayoral Candidate Aziz Yeniay was conducting election campaign activities. I pray for God's mercy upon our citizen who lost their life. Get well soon to us all. These threats against our democracy will never, ever turn us from our path!"

STATEMENT FROM MINISTER YERLİKAYA

Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikayamade a statement on his social media account regarding the attack.

Yerlikaya stated, "Today at approximately 16:30, shots were fired with long-barreled weapons and handguns at the location where AK Party Küçükçekmece Mayoral candidate Mr. Aziz Yeniay was holding a candidate introduction event in the Kanarya neighborhood. A female citizen named E. G. D. was injured in the attack. A comprehensive investigation into the attack has been initiated. I wish a speedy recovery to our injured citizen. I strongly condemn such heinous attacks against our election process and our democracy."

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlucondemned the attack in a message he posted on social media.

In his message, Imamoglu stated, "I have learned with sadness that an armed attack took place during the election campaign of Mayoral Candidate Mr. Aziz Yeniay. I wish God's mercy upon our citizen who lost their life in the incident and convey my get-well wishes to Mr. Yeniay. We will stand shoulder to shoulder against all dark groups trying to tarnish the democratic race."
