DİSK marches to Ankara: 'Justice in income, justice in taxation'

The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) is marching to Ankara for the "Justice in Income, Justice in Taxation" demand they have been pursuing for months.

The march, which DİSK President Arzu Çerkezoğlu and the Board of Directors will carry out today, began today in Söğütlüçeşme, Istanbul.

''THE TAX BURDEN IS INCREASING MORE EVERY DAY''

Noting that the government is causing impoverishment by further increasing the tax burden on workers, Çerkezoğlu stated, "We are experiencing the consequences of the political and class preferences of the AKP government that rules the country. Today, the minimum wage, which has become an average wage in Turkey, is far below even the hunger threshold, let alone the poverty line. They don't stop there; the tax burden is increasing more every day," she said.

''WE ARE MARCHING TO ANKARA FOR A FAIR TAX SYSTEM''

Stating that "the higher the indirect taxes in a country, the greater the tax injustice in that country," Çerkezoğlu said the following:

"That is why we are marching to Ankara for a fair tax system where those who earn less pay less tax, and those who earn more pay more. We pay our taxes before we even receive our wages. Both the rate of this tax we pay from our income is very high, and because income tax brackets are deliberately set low, we move to a higher tax bracket in the first months of the year as if we had become wealthy, and we pay more taxes."

After Arzu Çerkezoğlu finished her speech, the DİSK members began their march.

DİSK DELEGATION REACHED GEBZE

The DİSK delegation reached Gebze on their march to Ankara. While the people of Gebze supported the march, workers welcomed the DİSK delegation at Gebze City Square.

Çerkezoğlu stated, "We will take the demands of millions of laborers to Ankara."
