Fatih Portakal shares a detail about his university friend İmamoğlu: Give credit where credit is due

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu faced a reaction from a person as he was leaving Friday prayers on January 26, who asked, "Why do you only come to mosques and Friday prayers during election times?"

İmamoğlu responded to this reaction by saying, "I come to pray to the Creator. Not to show off like others."

Fatih Portakal, who anchors the Main News Bulletin on Sözcü TV, presented the news of the controversy by saying, "This is the work of political Islam." Following this, Fatih Portakal, who explained what kind of person Ekrem İmamoğlu—his friend from university years—is, used the following expressions:

"I know Ekrem İmamoğlu well. Give credit where credit is due. Ekrem was a man who went to Friday prayers every week; he loved football very much, he played as a goalkeeper, and as far as I know, he was the goalkeeper for the university team, the faculty team. He was a good Trabzonspor fan, he would fast, and he would go to Friday prayers. He was that kind of man, and not once did I ever hear a bad word or an insult from him. This is what 'political Islam' has done to the country. When he puts his head down to prostrate, they think he is a Muslim, a good Muslim. This is the mentality, unfortunately; this is the mindset, unfortunately."
