Highway murder suspects captured! Is revenge the motive behind the murder?
Seven people have been detained in connection with the murder of Ömer Faruk Özçelik, who was killed in an armed attack in a green area on the Esenler TEM Highway. Özçelik's friend, Onurcan Ç., who was with him during the attack, was also injured. It was learned that the brother of one of the captured suspects, S. Yılmaz, was also killed in an armed attack in Eyüpsultan in October, and that authorities are investigating whether the murder was committed for revenge.

In the incident that occurred on the TEM O-3 connection road on November 27, 2023, at approximately 23:00, the suspects allegedly wanted to meet with Ömer Faruk Özçelik by sending him a location. After Özçelik went to the location in the green area on the Esenler highway, the suspects called him on the phone a short while later. They stated that they were waiting by their vehicles.
Seeing Özçelik and his friend Onurcan from the wooded area, the suspects carried out the attack. Özçelik, who fled into the wooded area, lost his life at the scene. Onurcan was injured.
The Public Security Branch Murder Bureau teams, who launched an investigation to capture the suspects who fled after the incident, identified the individuals who carried out the attack. In a simultaneous operation, 29-year-old Ahmet Y., 26-year-old S. Yılmaz, 31-year-old Cengizhan T., 19-year-old Salih S.K., 23-year-old Ömer Ö., 21-year-old Muhammed F.K., and 27-year-old Samet K., all of whom have criminal records, were detained. During searches conducted at the suspects' homes, 2 unlicensed 9 mm pistols, 46 cartridges, and a bulletproof vest were seized.
IS IT A REVENGE MURDER?
It was revealed that the brother of one of the detained suspects, S. Yılmaz, a hotel operator named Hamza Yılmaz, was killed in an armed attack in Eyüpsultan in October. The police are focusing on the possibility that S. Yılmaz may have committed the murder for revenge, suspecting that Özçelik and his friend were involved in his brother's death.
