Nurse who worked at hospital named in 'Newborn Gang' investigation speaks out: 'I filed a complaint with the Ministry of Health'

New details are emerging every day regarding the 'newborn gang,' which generated illicit profits by referring newborn babies to contracted hospitals and caused the deaths of some infants.

Taner Karataş, who worked as an intensive care nurse in 2018 at TRG Hospitalist in Bağcılar, which is mentioned in the investigation, spoke about the process.

"NOTHING IS DONE IN SECRET"

Claiming that he knew the individuals involved in the allegations and worked with them, intensive care nurse Taner Karataş said, “I am 25 years old. I worked at the Hospitalist Hospital in Bağcılar in 2018. I also served in other hospitals that have since been closed due to external shift requirements.

I know many of the people mentioned. We worked together and took orders from them. When I left the hospital, I was aware of this situation, and that is why I quit.

I filed a complaint with the Ministry of Health. My three friends and I realized what was happening in the second week, quit our jobs, and filed a complaint,” he said.

"THE NURSE ACTS LIKE A DOCTOR AND ADMITS THE PATIENT"

Speaking about the patient referral process, Karataş said, "The 112 Emergency Health Service calls the hospital and speaks with a doctor. At the hospital where I worked, the head nurse handled these tasks. She presented herself as a doctor, but she was a nurse. After the head nurse introduced herself as a doctor, she would admit the patient, and the patient's relatives would also recognize her as a doctor.

In fact, the incident begins from the moment the patient arrives at the hospital. Once the patient is admitted, it is not a very good intensive care unit, and their treatment is incomplete. The recovery process is prolonged; even if the patient recovers, they are not discharged. They are exposed to intensive care infections, and the patient loses their life at the end of the process.

I never worked in the newborn unit, but the process works exactly the same way there. Intensive care nurses eventually dull their consciences. What matters is who you choose to be; do you want to be a killer or a healer? We knew without a doubt that they would be caught; in the end, they were caught and are now facing their punishment,” he stated.

"INSPECTORS FROM THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH WENT TO THAT HOSPITAL"

Karataş said, “I continued to work in a private hospital and then left there. Newly graduated friends of ours also do not want to work there because the people who are supposed to train them are these individuals. You become a member of this gang, whether willingly or unwillingly.

Everyone working in intensive care knows what is being done. The cleaning staff knows, the auxiliary staff knows, and sometimes even the patients' relatives understand, but they do not speak up because they have no choice but to trust them.

Following my complaint, inspectors from the Ministry of Health actually went to that hospital, but the hospital was notified before the inspection and they fixed everything,” he said.
