On May 1st Labor and Solidarity Day, Taksim Square was once again closed to workers. In line with the measures taken by the Istanbul Governor's Office, not only Taksim but many points across the city were closed to traffic from the early hours of the morning. During this process, where citizens experienced serious difficulties in transportation, they were asked to use alternative routes.

Within the scope of the measures taken by the Governor's Office, all roads leading to Taksim were closed to transportation. While strict security measures were implemented across the city, tensions arose between citizens and police in many squares and streets. One of these points was Mecidiyeköy Square.

One of the individuals who remained under the intense security measures of the security forces in the square in question was CHP Şanlıurfa MP Mahmut Tanal. Reacting to the practices of the police teams, Tanal strongly objected to the situation, saying, 'Why have you surrounded us? Why are you blocking my path? I am a member of parliament.'

Showing his parliamentary ID, Tanal hardened his words further, opposing the attitude of the security forces with the following expressions: 'Did your father give me this ID? The people gave it to me, your father did not give me this ID. Why are you blocking my path? Do not surround me wherever I go. We know how many security personnel in this country commit crimes as well. You cannot treat a member of parliament as a criminal. A person is trying to go to work and you don't let them, they are going home and you don't let them.'
